Leasing Monroe Township High School Facilities: A Fiscally Responsible Decision

After two failed referendums, the Monroe Township community has been left to ponder what went wrong and how to move forward with providing adequate facilities for its students. Instead of going back to the drawing board a third time, school officials have decided to take a different approach – leasing existing high school facilities rather than building new ones.

According to Board President Chrissy Skurbe, this decision is a culmination of over 10 years of effort and planning. Despite numerous attempts to develop plans that would be accepted by the community, previous proposals were met with resistance. One idea that was floated was taking ninth grade out of the high school and moving it back into the middle school, while also moving sixth grade out of the middle school and placing it back in elementary schools.

However, rather than continuing down this path, Skurbe explained that the community has decided to take a more fiscally responsible approach. 'We really wanted to take a look at what we could do, be fiscally responsible, and add onto our buildings that currently exist,' she said.

By leasing existing facilities, the school district can avoid the high costs associated with building new schools from scratch. This decision will not only save the community money but also allow for resources to be allocated elsewhere.

While some may view this decision as a compromise, Skurbe emphasized that it is a necessary step in order to move forward and provide the best possible education for Monroe Township students. 'We have had various ad hoc committees that have looked at many different plans,' she said. 'This is a culmination of going through the last 10 years.'
